Earlier this month, Ganguly condemned the horrific incident, but his remarks ignited controversy. At an event on August 11, Ganguly expressed his shock as a father of a daughter, calling the incident “terrible” and “really scary.” He emphasized that such tragedies could occur anywhere and suggested that security measures like CCTV cameras should be enhanced. He also mentioned that it was unfair to judge the safety of an entire region based on a single event.

Ganguly’s comments drew significant criticism, especially his statement that West Bengal and India should not be judged by one isolated incident. Critics argued that this downplayed the severity of the situation.

In response to the backlash, Ganguly issued a clarification, stating that his words were misinterpreted. “My earlier comments were misunderstood. This is a dreadful incident, and those responsible must face severe punishment. The ongoing investigation is crucial, and I hope the culprits will be caught and held accountable. The public outcry reflects the gravity of the situation, and similar reactions would be seen anywhere in the world,” Ganguly said in his clarification.
